Set of three replacement batteries for the illuminated keychains. Currently Sony brand. Note that the specific battery brand is subject to availability, though always a brand name.
The keychain lighting is powered by three 1.55-volt silver oxide SR621SW micro-coin
(also called ‘button’) batteries commonly used in watches and small
electronics, and sold in retail stores. One set of batteries comes with the purchase of a keychain, and the keychain is shipped with the batteries already installed. This is a spare set of batteries available for purchase, together with a REQUIRED plastic tube insert (see below.)
Battery
replacement:
IMPORTANT CAUTION: When replacing batteries, be careful when unscrewing the
cap of the battery compartment, making sure you do not loose the spring
located in the cap.
IMPORTANT CAUTION: Note the orientation of the batteries as you are
removing them to ensure you replace with new batteries in the same
orientation.
The three batteries that come installed in the keychain
are provided by the manufacturer plastic wrapped as a single battery package. The plastic wrap is important, keeping each battery's metal housing from touching the metal battery compartment of the keychain. This is essential for correct operation, ensuring the keychain's LED light receives the correct voltage.
The replacement batteries are not plastic wrapped as a single battery package, but are provided as 3 individual batteries as you would purchase at a retail store. To ensure these batteries do not touch the metal battery compartment of the keychain, a small plastic tube is provided with the replacement batteries for insertion into the battery compartment.
NOTE ON THE BATTERY REPLACEMENT PACKAGE: the keychains are not available from the manufacturer with the plastic tube insert and three individual batteries. To provide purchasers of the keychain the ability to replace the batteries, and at low cost, the National Center for Earth and Space Science Education created this battery replacement package.
NOTE ON BATTERY COST: the cost of this battery replacement package is roughly 1/3 the cost of three SR621SW batteries purchased at Radio Shack or CVS.
To replace batteries: 1. Carefully unscrew cap, making sure not to loose the spring located in the cap. 2. Remove old battery package, noting the orientation of the batteries as you take them out. 3. Insert the plastic tube in the battery compartment. 4. Drop the three new batteries inside the plastic tube, with the batteries in the same orientation as the old battery package. 5. Carefully screw on the cap until fully seated.
