Illuminated Keychain #1 (of 5) in Crystal and Chrome
The inner planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars are laser-sculpted in 3D inside solid crystal—at exactly one 10-billionth actual size—as they are depicted in the Voyage scale model Solar System on the National Mall in Washington, DC. A bright LED provides stunning illumination of the art in the crystal.

The Inner Planets of the Solar System
at One 10-Billionth Actual Size

This is one of five illuminated keychains that together contain the 8 planets of the Solar System as they are found in the Voyage scale model Solar System exhibition, laser-sculpted in 3D at exactly one 10-billionth actual size.

This keychain (Keychain 1) contains the inner planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars.

As is the case for the exhibition, the highly accurate model worlds in the keychains include the oblateness of Jupiter and Saturn, the orientations in space of the planetary ring systems, and the ring structure.

The keychains have a (1.2 x 1.2 inch) crystal base in which the 3D art is laser-sculpted by Seaena—the exclusive fabricator for the Voyage exhibition. The keychains are illuminated with a LED by depressing a button, bringing the art into spectacular view, and the bright light makes the keychain fully functional to find a keyhole at night. In the photo above, the illumination is solely from the LED, and the temporary black band is being used to depress the button. The color of the metal components is chrome, but they appear gold-colored in the photo due to the low light level used to photograph the keychain with the LED on.

Each keychain includes Earth for comparison. Use your keychain as a Teachable Moment with friends and family. Ask them how big they think other planets might be compared to Earth, then pull out the answer. If you want to be a really big supporter of the Center's programs, buy all five keychains and take the Solar System home!

Crystal thickness: 0.6 inches (15 mm)

Beveled edges on the crystal to prevent chipping.

Keychain Weight in gift box: 3 oz (0.1 kg); does not include packing material for shipment

Batteries and Battery Replacement: the keychain lighting is powered by three 1.55-volt silver oxide SR621SW micro-coin (also called ‘button’) batteries commonly used in watches and small electronics, and sold in retail stores. One set of batteries is included, and is already installed in the keychain. A battery replacement package can be purchased here at Store Galactica FOR 1/3 THE COST OF THE BATTERIES AT RETAIL STORES.

IMPORTANT NOTE: for normal operation of the keychain light, replacing batteries ALSO REQUIRES that a small plastic tube insulator be inserted in the keychain's battery compartment. The plastic tube insert is included in the battery replacement package at Store Galactica. Battery replacement requirements, and the need for the plastic tube insert, are found in the description of the battery replacement package.

Warranty: there is a 10-day warranty on the keychain electronics. Purchaser is responsible for shipping costs for the return of a defective unit. Store Galactica will cover shipping of a new unit back to purchaser. There is no warranty on the batteries. There is no warranty on the crystal. All product is carefully inspected and carefully packaged before shipping. Damage in transit is the responsibility of the shipper.  

Customizing: you can add laser-burned custom text, and/or a web URL in the crystal for an added set up fee.
