About the Crystal Sculptures at Store Galactica.

This product is a Crystal Sculpture from the Voyage National Program, and is part of the How We Explore

A stunning crystal sculpture of the
Gemini North telescope near the top of 13,800-foot (4,200 meter) Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawai'i. Shown in exquisite detail are the open observatory dome, the telescope within, and tiny people on the summit to scale.
This art was originally commissioned by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation for inclusion in the Explorers Stanchion of the Voyage model Solar System in Kansas City, Kansas. The Explorers Stanchion is located in front of Kansas City's historic Union Station. One of the largest telescopes on Earth, we chose the Gemini North Observatory as a shining example of how we humans explore a greater universe from the surface of our home world Earth. On behalf of the human race, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK TEAM GEMINI!

The Gemini Observatory
Mauna Kea, Hawai'i

The telescope reproduced in the crystal in stunning detail is Gemini North - also called the Frederick C. Gillett Telescope - located on Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawaii. The Gemini Observatory actually consists of two telescopes – Gemini North, and Gemini South located on Cerro Pachón in the Chilean Andes. Together, the two telescopes can see the entire sky.

Both telescopes have a primary mirror whose diameter is 26 feet (8.1 meters). Gemini North saw first light in 1999, and Gemini South in 2000. The Gemini telescopes are two of the top twelve largest optical/infrared telescopes in the world.

Journey through the Universe in Hawaii

In 2004 the Gemini Observatory, together with the Hawaii Department of Education and the University of Hawaii, joined the Journey through the Universe program launched by the Center in 1999. Journey through the Universe across the Big Island’s North Hilo/Laupahoehoe/Waiakea Complex is now in its 6th year, and includes annual visits by dozens of scientists and engineers to over 7,000 grade K-12 students, professional development for teachers, and family and public events. The Journey program’s vision for sustainable community-wide education in the Earth and space sciences is a bold reality on the Big Island. Gemini led the way. See what’s in store for Journey in Hawaii in 2010.
